The General Data Protection Regulation, commonly referred to as GDPR, is new EU legislation which has been developed to provide individuals with greater control and clarity over how they are communicated to, how their personal data is safeguarded and used. The legislation ensures that data is processed and managed lawfully, fairly and transparently.

The GDPR becomes enforceable in the UK from 25th May 2018, and with fines levied of up to 20m or 4% of annual global turnover, it is essential that businesses of all sizes are ready.

With the extensive coverage in the media of GDPR and the far-reaching implications of legislation, it’s understandable that becoming compliant might feel daunting. Many organisations have concerns over how much existing data can be retained as GDPR will require individuals to opt back into communications. However, this provides an opportunity for organisations to ensure data is up to date and that all recipients are engaged and interested in the broadcasted messaging. Cleansing of data will most likely increase ROI on future communications.
