Friday 24th July saw the first running of what is sure to be a yearly event – Gecko Sports day! This fundraiser sprouted from the need for Gecko to hold a fundraising event to raise money for our next big charity endurance event – Race the Sun. 16 “Geckos” are taking part at the end of August and we’re raising money for Action for Medical Research.

Race the Sun takes part in the Lake District and is a combination of 50 miles on a bike, a climb up Helvellyn and a 3km canoe across Lake Thirlmere. Considering the charity challenge is sports based we decided there was no better way to raise money than to hold a good old fashioned sports day!

Old Leodiensian Rugby club in Alwoodley, nr Leeds kindly agreed to host us for the evening. The facilities were brilliant – with the club house providing a perfect viewing platform for spectators to observe moments of sporting greatness as well as sporting bloopers!

Six teams of four took part in the event, two were from Gecko with the remaining teams being made up of suppliers, husbands, parents and friends. Old fashioned sports day games were the order of the day and included rounders, egg and spoon, tug of war, sack race, 5 legged race as well as a Rugby drop kick competition. James Todd (our resident football coach) also challenged teams to put one past him in a “Beat the Goalie” competition – the winners were the parents of the football team he coaches – he must be doing something right!

A prize giving ceremony glided into an evening of raffle prizes, slightly flawed rock and roll bingo and teams celebrating their victories whilst reminiscing on near misses and could’ve beens. The team from TEAM Impression were clear winners once again (following their victory at Go Karting in May) gaining most of their points through demolishing the opposition during Tug of War. Throughout the event we raised over £900 for charity which is a massive chunk towards our £6000 target for Race the Sun.

Special thanks must go to: Fretwells, Bluetree, “The Parents”, Team Impression, Sam Lyon, James Todd, Anthony Bagshaw, Hannah Harris-Smith, Old Leodiensian’s RUFC, The White Swan, Guiseley Girls U12s, Image Co, KKWT, Edinburgh Woollen Mill Shop, Print On and PPL.
