At Gecko we decided to celebrate Christmas on Friday 20th December by doing a secret Santa, having a Christmas themed bake-off, and everyone wore Christmas jumpers.
From the beginning of the week, people began to put presents under the tree. This was very exciting for certain people (me). Finally on Friday, everyone’s presents had arrived, all from ‘Santa’. At lunch time everyone met in the production building to open presents. Some people were very happy with what they had received – Nick who is a big Star Wars fan was given a William Shakespeare’s Star Wars book. Ben’s favourite pastime is taking a relaxing bubble bath with a glass of wine was given bubble bath and a bottle of wine. There was however some people who were less than impressed with their Secret Santa gifts. Firstly, Gaz who is an avid follower of Liverpool Football Club was given a Leeds United mug, which was left on the table. After moaning about receiving Lynx Africa as a present three years ago, Richard has received the same present ever since, this year was special however as the Lynx Africa was XL this time!
The majority of Gecko employees showed up to work wearing festive jumpers, which would later be judged. There were a variety of Christmas jumpers – Rudolphs, Santas, Snowmen, Penguins, Christmas puddings, and so on. My favourite (although technically not a Christmas jumper) was Paul Jacques, who had decorated himself as a Christmas tree with tinsel, baubles and even flashing lights. In the end the winner of the Christmas jumper competition was Jez, who had pinned a piece of paper saying ‘Merry Christmas’ to this T-Shirt.
It was decided this year we would have an anonymous bake off. No one knew who baked what, and each entry had just a number. There were minced pies, cupcakes, truffles, whoopee pies, sausage rolls and a cheesecake. After the votes had been made and counted, it was announced that three entries had come joint first – the truffles, cheesecake and sausage rolls. These belonged to Katie, Rhiannon and Dan.
We all had a great day and it was a great start to Christmas, helping everyone get into the festive spirit. For the readers of our blog Merry Christmas and a happy New Year from all the team here at Gecko and hope to see you back in 2014.
